Case Study - CRYER & STOTT
CRYER & STOTT
When Richard Holmes bought Cryer & Stott, a small grocers stall in Wakefield market hall six years ago, he wanted to change food retailing in West Yorkshire, by offering fine and artisan foods, sourced locally and sold through the market halls, rather than shops or delis. Richard sees ideal food retailing as an unbroken chain of knowledge and good service from producer to consumer.
Richard says, "Retail customers and chefs will pay for high quality, hand produced food, but they want to know how it’s made, how to use it and where it comes from, while the producer needs to know what the customer wants."

The central link is the market stall, with its personal service, its simplicity. "The thing that really sells it is our knowledge," says Richard. Cryer & Stott now sells cheeses, meats, pies and other speciality foods is a regular on the South Yorkshire Farmers Market circuit.
