| LEA HOUSE APIARIES |
| Ian & Monica Coates started keeping bees as and interesting hobby in 1990. Lea House Apiaries has now grown to become a small husband and wife business with hives in various locations around the Rotherham area on farmland, allotments, garden centres and country parks. |
To increase the amount of honey produced, they’ve adopted a migratory style of beekeeping. This involves keeping bees in the local area for the spring flowers, including the oilseed rape but then moving them to the Yorkshire Wolds in late June for the borage crop and then to the moors above Stocksbridge for the heather crop.
The farming of bees and collection of honey is mainly confined to the months of April through to October, although the processing and packaging of hive products is done all year round with Ian concentrating on the cleaning up and assembling of new equipment, whilst Monica enjoys processing the beeswax to make candles and various beeswax products. Lea House Apiaries can often be found at local craft fairs and Penistone Farmers Market. |
